My tour trip to old calabar was educative and informative. The tour guide Mr.Martin was outspoken and well equipped with vital historical information on old calabar and it added more to my social being. I discovered so many historical sites which I would like to share with you.
1. The European Cemetery where MARY SLESSOR was buried. MARY was a Scottish missionary who lived in old calabar from the nineteenth century until her death in 1915. Her memory is Cherished in the city for having led the movement to abolish the killing of twins.
2. The largest flag in West Africa is here in calabar. Measured 14 by 20 meters wide, the flag is currently regarded as the highest and largest in Africa and second highest in the world. It is located at the Millennium Park, along Eleven Eleven Roundabout in Calabar, Cross River State. Hoisted by MR. DONALD DUKE, the former Governor of Cross River State as part of his valedictory gift to the state.
3. The Watt Market which is the largest in cross river state was named after JAMES WATT a British merchant,and was established in the year 1901.
4. The statue of LATE PRINCE BASSEY DUKE EPHRAIM IX erected graciously at the roundabout by the famous watt market in calabar. He was a philanthropist and the last reigning Obong of calabar before colonialism.
5. The first ever photographic studio in the whole of calabar(Fernandez Providence Studio 1924), was owned by LATE ALEXANDER PEDRO SIXTUS FERNANDEZ and can still be found in Henshaw Town, calabar.
6. The statue of LATE DR. LAWRENCE MICHAEL EKENG RICHARD HENSHAW. He was the first Director of Medical Service in West Africa, and he died in the year 1955 as a result of a plane crash.
7. The Presbyterian Church of Nigeria was founded by United Presbyterian Church of Scotland missionaries led by the REV. HOPE MASTERSON WADDELL. (1846).
8. The first Pipe Borne Water was established in the year 1938 by the first Indigenous Academic Professor, LATE PROF. LAWRENCE EYO ITA.
9. The Ekpe Stone also known as The Independent Stone was commissioned on the 1st of October 1960.
10. Ekikak Printing Press was the first privately owned printing press by LATE CHIEF ALBERT EFFANGA HENSHAW. They produced locally made wine known as the EKIKAK COLA, it was used in churches for communion services and also for Hearse services.
